Bollards!

There's been some half-hearted talk of bus lanes in Dubai of late, but of course you then have the problem of how to stop unauthorised vehicles from using these lanes. Manchester in the UK has the answer - retractable bollards.

My car is a bus - really!

Many thanks to Sickboy for finding this gem: it really made my day.

Brilliant! We could play "What Gets Speared Next" roulette while we wait in traffic. Mercedes? Hummer? Ferrari? Place your bets!

I imagine the bus drivers all have some sort of remote control device to lower the bollards. But since it would takejust a skinny minute for the wasta brigade to get their hands on them, what would be the point?

WooHoo!

I'm famous

:P

I understand they use an encrypted wireless link to lower them and they all seem to have cameras by them too - so may be it's a manual process?

Ha! You can just imagine the carnage in Dubai with that system!

I saw them in action in Washington, DC outside the White House.

Mme Cyn: that was my thought too - every sheikhmobile will be equipped with one in no time.

I wonder how they know when to go back up again? They rise pretty quickly after the bus has passed. Maybe a signal from a transmitter on the back bumper of the bus?

Well found Keefieboy. They all deserved all they got, and more, except the poor toddler. It's always the innocent who get hurt isn't it...

Brilliant!

But without proper awareness among drivers, it can be disastrous too.
