Doesn't The World Have Enough Madmen?

So, Pastor Terry Jones, a Florida-based leader of A Very Small Church Of Nutters, has declared this coming September 11th to be 'International Burn a Koran Day'. Despite massive condemnation from Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton, the Pope and Tony Blair, he is still planning to go ahead and throw 200 Qurans onto a bonfire. I find it incredibly hard to believe that, in a country where pretty much anyone can be arrested for pretty much anything, this moron from hell cannot be stopped from carrying out this vile act. Sadly, there's also no way you can explain that to the proto-rioters in Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Middle East and bits of North Africa, who are so used to a lack of freedom they think if your Government knows you are about to do something insanely stupid and doesn't stop you from doing it, then that government implicitly supports your actions.

In this case, bollocks to freedom of speech. Pastor Jones must know the impact of what he is planning, and the likely consequences thereof. If the US government cannot stop him, then there is something seriously wrong with the system.

While I agree with you viz. the Koran burning some things to note:

This man is more of a cult leader than a church leader. He has like 30 people in his group if that tells you anything.

You are also correct that we have an overly intrusive legal system here. However, free speech is sacrosanct. That he is free to burn the Koran is part of the deal. He's also free to burn the Bible, the American flag and those infernal Twilight books.

Would you be similarly upset about Bible burnings in the Muslim world? If not, why not? What about the American flag? The Union Jack?

I don't agree with laws against "hate speech" because the definition is too slippery. YMMV.

Duffy!!!

Would I be upset about any holy-book-burning / flag burning? Yes, I would: things like this are symbols that are important to the people who believe in them. To deliberately destroy them is an intentional provocation.

I rest my case.

The problem is that, when he does burn the Koran, the likelihood is that thousands will riot and many people will die, thus proving his point.

I would rather the man was starved of the oxygen of publicity - I mean who cared about him and his cult of redneck morons until a week or two ago? He needs to be exposed for the publicity seeking numpty that he is, and then ignored.
