Islamic New Year

The Islamic New Year is coming up in a few days, and once again we have confusion over holidays. It was announced last week that the Gubment sector would have Tuesday off. Yesterday that was changed to Wednesday so that those in the Gubment sector would get a long weekend (the normal weekend for this sector is Thursday / Friday). Today it was announced that the private sector will have Thursday off. This is, of course, grossly unfair to those in the private sector whose weekend is Thursday / Friday. They will not be getting a day off. Their employers will not be required to give a day off in lieu.

Anyhoo, happy 1427, whenever it is!

Its amazing how they change the days of the public holidays here to their own convenience. I think this is the only country in the world where they manage to change the New Year to two different dates for different labor sectors just to give the people an un-interrupted "long" weekend.

Hey - sounds just like a place I used to work here in the States. We got 2 days off per week, Sunday and a weekday. On holidays, we got the day off...but had to forfeit our usual weekday. If the holiday was on Sunday...well, it was just like any other day and we did not get an additional day off to compensate.

Maybe they got the idea from Dubai... :P
